A young woman living in Los Angeles named Madeline did a 365 day project that’s a bit different than most: instead of taking a picture a day, she decided to document each day with roughly one second of footage. At the conclusion of 2011, she combined all 365 video clips into this beautiful 7-minute-long video that offers a glimpse into what her year was like.

Have you already slipped up with your New Year’s Resolutions? Why not make one that’s both creative and easy to keep (we won’t tell that you started a few days late!) The 365 Project is easy and incredibly fun: take one photo every day for 365 days.  That’s it. You can upload, share, and check out other photographers’ work. Check out the 365 Project’s blog, too, for more year-round fun!

The Indie Photobook Library (iPL) was founded in 2010 by Larissa Leclair. In a nutshell, it’s an archive for Photobooks of every ilk and persuasion. It strives to preserve and showcase self-published photobooks, independently published & distributed photobooks, photography exhibition catalogs, print-on-demand photobooks, artist books, zines, photobooks printed on newsprint, limited edition photobooks, and non-English language photography books.

Having a specific collection dedicated to these kinds of books allows for the development of future discourse on trends in self-publishing, the ability to reflect on and compare books in the collection, and for scholarly research to be conducted in years, decades, and centuries to come. And the best part is that it was designed with the wish that collections be seen in person through traveling exhibitions and as a non-circulating public library. Which means that, not only can collections be viewed online, there’s a chance you’ll have an opportunity to see an exhibit at a gallery near you!

And If you have a photobook of your own, you can submit it to the IPL and become part of photobook history!

What is Guess The Lighting, you ask? In the blogger’s words: “Armed with only a wacom tablet, less-than-mediocre drawing skills and an acute sense of smell, professional photographer Ted Sabarese guesses how individual images were lit by other photographers and then sketches corresponding lighting diagrams. It’s what you always wanted to know but didn’t know who to ask.” In our words: A bit of awesome. Go check it out.

Alex Prager is a force to be reckoned with in the fine art photography world. With her cinematic-style photography she breaks down barriers between still photography and film. If you haven’t heard of her before get to know her now. Her recent New York Times feature, A Touch of Evil, has created quite a sensation – and with good reason. Check out her “video gallery of cinematic villainy, inspired by nefarious icons and featuring the best performers from the year in film.”

What Do You See? by Gary Simmons

Bloggy Goodness

With the holiday season in full swing, we’re bound to get a little nostalgic. And Dear Photograph is where nostalgia meets present day. Submitters are asked, simply, to “take a picture of a picture from the past in the present,” echoing a similar body of work by Michael Hughes, called Souvenirs. Check it out – it’s a very endearing and entertaining concept.

What a Face!

What a Face! by Joel Brochu
What looks like an image of a beagle is actually a high definition photograph of a 4’ by 1 ½’ board covered in 221,184 nonpareils sprinkles. At a distance of 16 feet, the sprinkles blur, tricking the human eye into believing that it is looking at a large photograph. Only when you closely examine the work do you realize that it has been created entirely with tiny spheres of candy. Taking 8 months to complete, only 6 colors were used. CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos has a bit of background posted as his Awesome Thing of the Day for November 30.

NPR’s The Picture Show was named top pick in LIFE.com’s 2011 Photo Blog Awards – and with good reason.  Sometimes serious (portraits taken in Italy’s triangle of death), sometimes playful (fire ants that float!), NPR’s The Picture Show is like a curious friend with big-time resources. You never know what you’re going to find on The Picture Show – and that’s meant as the highest compliment. The curators look around and ask questions: Why did that Cindy Sherman picture sell for almost $4 million? Who’s behind those photos of exploding potatoes? What does the inside of Antarctica’s Ice Cube Neutrino Observatory look like? (For the record, eerie and amazing.) The generous allotment of photos and text often comes with video and links to NPR stories. If you’re stuck eating lunch at your desk, you will have no better companion than The Picture Show.
