The Forgotten – An Urban Christmas 2009

This item was filled under [ News ]

If all else fails during the calendar year, most of us tend to think of Christmas Day (regardless of faith or religious belief) as the one day we spend with family & friends – those nearest and dearest to us – for food, fun and good cheer. And it’s a day spent in the comfort of our own home (or someone’s home). But we expect that it’s always indoors: warm, dry and comfortable.

In our busy day to day we tend to take these things, all too easily, for granted. So much so that we, sadly, find it easy to walk past our fellow human beings – who don’t have the luxury of a warm bed, a hot meal, or even a roof over their heads – and not bat an eye. Vistek’s Derek Shanks spent his Christmas, this year, in the company of some Toronto residents who have found themselves in exactly this situation. The Forgotten – An Urban Christmas 2009 is an incredibly eye-opening photo essay that shines a light on the unfortunate plight of those without benefit of  income, a room to call their own, or even daily sustenance.

It’s far too easy to dismiss those nameless people we pass every day on our way to work and to take for granted all of the riches (both material and otherwise) we possess in our own personal lives. And, despite the bitter cold & unrelenting rain this past Dec. 25, Shanks spent hours giving both a name & a voice to many of them. Visit his blog and meet them for yourselves.

Canson Infinity versus Hahnemuhle: Luminous Landscape’s Baryta Showdown

This item was filled under [ Gear, News ]

Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscape has just finished a hands-on review of both Hahnemuhle Baryta FB and Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique. Pitting inket industry stalwart Hahnemuhle against newcomers (to inkjet paper, that is… not the industry at large) Canson Infinity, Reichmann set out to test the mettle of both papers.

llcansonhan

About Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique:
There is a brilliance to the paper – depth of saturation, apparent dMax (though this is of course a function of the ink, not the paper) and a “three dimensionality” that can only be appreciated in person. Describing papers is like describing wine. Words simply can’t do it, and in this case there is nothing that can be shown online. One simply has to try a pack for oneself.

About Hahnemuhle Baryta FB:
…the reason for the apparent base paper colour was the high levels of OBAs in the paper, and that apparently “Europeans like this look”. It was further explained that once profiled the magenta cast would “profile out” and that the advantage of the paper’s brighter whites would be apparent.

Which of these paper giants came out on top? Check out the full review here and see for yourself.

Photo Critique: Submission #3

This item was filled under [ News ]

Our Photo Critique section has been on a bit of a hiatus, but we figured with the holidays right around the corner this was the perfect opportunity to offer up some free praise & constructive advice.

This submission, from John Koller, was taken while hiking along a trail in Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. He captured this shot with his Nikon D80 f/ 5.6 at 1/500 and low ISO using a Nikkor AF-S 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR II lens.

“It was about 115 °F and I came across this poor critter. It’s like he cooked on the rock! I did not know how this turned out until I got back home because the conditions were so bright that my review screen was too washed out to make any adjustments and re-shoot. Plus, did I mention it was hot! Back home I downloaded it to Aperture 2. A few minor adjustments brought out the colors in the rock formation and the detail in the shadow of the skull. I like the blur in the background. Again thanks for the critique in advance.” – J. Koller

So… tell us your thoughts!

Showcase your talent at Contact 2010!

This item was filled under [ News, Seminars & Events ]

contactlogoVistek is currently accepting submissions for photographers interested in participating in the 2010 Contact Photography Festival. We will provide free gallery space at our Toronto and Mississauga locations. More details to follow.

For 2010, CONTACT is honouring Marshall McLuhan on the 30th anniversary of his death, with a thematic focus that will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior. The festival will present images that examine connections between mass media, advertising, art and photography. This includes conceptual approaches to photography that utilize the codes of advertising, the language of consumerism, the stylization of marketing campaigns and the force of propaganda. Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture. CONTACT 2010 will explore the personal and social consequences of the medium of photography, in a society devoted to the image.

If you’re interested in being a part of this year’s event, you’re asked to send a sample of 5 web res. images along with a CV and short statement about you & your work to Camila Gargantini.

Submissions to be part of the Vistek showcase must be received no later than November 26/09.

The Optoma HD20: full 1080p projection without breaking the bank!

This item was filled under [ Gear, News ]

DH20Think an HD projector is something out of your price range? Think again! The folks at Optoma have brought 1080p projectors to a new level of affordability – and now everyone can add to their high-def home theater/multi-media experience – full HD for $1,199!

Displaying full 1080p with a maximum display size of 120″ (diagonally) the Optoma HD20 is perfect for sharing big-screen movies and TV (and can you imagine concerts, pay-per-view sports or video gaming?)

The small, lightweight projector (a mere 6.4lbs) has two HDMI inputs, component and composite inputs, plus a VGA port for connecting a computer. It also features 1,700 ANSI lumens of brightness, with an estimated lamp life of  4,000 hours in standby mode and 3,000 hours in bright mode. And Optoma is so confident in the HD20 projector that they’ve guaranteed that the projector colour will stay the same as the day you bought it, for at least 5 years.

Check it out for yourself!
