A group of 19 internationally recognized professionals in the field of photojournalism and documentary photography convened in Amsterdam from January 28 to February 9 to judge this year’s entries. 101,254 photos were submitted by 5,247 photographers from 12 countries this year – so, it goes without saying, that the judges had their work cut out for them.

The 2012 Photo of the Year honour goes to Spanish photographer, Samuel Aranda, for his photo of  a woman holding a wounded relative in her arms, inside a mosque used as a field hospital by demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, during clashes in Sanaa, Yemen on 15 October 2011.
