ProFusion in Marketnews’ Here’s How!

Marketnews was there — were you? Check out what Gordon Brockhouse had to say about our inaugural event:

The weather in the Greater Toronto Area on the last weekend of spring was gorgeous, but that didn’t keep local videographers from heading indoors to take in the ProFusion 2010 Pro Video Expo. The two-day event was held at the Toronto Congress Centre on June 18 and 19, and produced by Toronto-based Vistek Ltd. After the show, Vistek President Ron Silverstein told Marketnews that over 2,000 people attended the event.

Sliverstein said the idea for a pro video show had been germinating at Vistek over the past couple of years, after VP Kevin Parker and other members of the management team attended NAB conventions in the U.S. “We thought it would be good for these manufacturers to talk to our customers,” Sliverstein said, “but there is no venue for this.” Six months ago, Vistek began early preparatory work on the project, and intensive work began about four months ago.

Sony HDR-FX7 HDV Camcorder

Sony HDR-FX7 HDV Camcorder

Continued from “My Story”

Last year I had been using the Sony FX-7 as my primary camera and was happy with the footage but due to its size and weight, I was limited to how I could use it.

I took the  conventional approach and set-up rigging, hanging in a stationary position to shoot.  With Fred Flintstone stick and ducttape modifications, I quickly realized how a) my gear was unsafe and b) the physical size and weight of the video camera limited my movement.

I wanted to be able to move with my subject and shoot from different angles at one rigging point.  I needed a smaller and lighter camera.  And this is what brought me to Vistek.

Up to the third floor I went to the video department to get some advice and possible solutions to my dilemma.  Fred introduced me to the Sony MC-1, a small, lightweight HD camera with the added bonus of being separated from the viewfinder/battery pack by a 9ft umbilical cord.  Stick it on the end of a 10ft pole and I was pretty sure it would help me to get the shots I desired.

It was actually small enough that I could stuff it into a backpack and free climb to the various positions I wanted to shoot from, set-up my own anchor stations as I needed the shoot the footage, collapse my anchors and move to a new positions.

I was very excited to get into the field and test my new camera!

Showcase your talent at Contact 2010!

This item was filled under [ News, Seminars & Events ]

contactlogoVistek is currently accepting submissions for photographers interested in participating in the 2010 Contact Photography Festival. We will provide free gallery space at our Toronto and Mississauga locations. More details to follow.

For 2010, CONTACT is honouring Marshall McLuhan on the 30th anniversary of his death, with a thematic focus that will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior. The festival will present images that examine connections between mass media, advertising, art and photography. This includes conceptual approaches to photography that utilize the codes of advertising, the language of consumerism, the stylization of marketing campaigns and the force of propaganda. Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture. CONTACT 2010 will explore the personal and social consequences of the medium of photography, in a society devoted to the image.

If you’re interested in being a part of this year’s event, you’re asked to send a sample of 5 web res. images along with a CV and short statement about you & your work to Camila Gargantini.

Submissions to be part of the Vistek showcase must be received no later than November 26/09.
